Derek Sim’s work embodies a unique diversity of both pattern and colour, placing disorder within the structure of the architecture in which Sim takes his inspiration from.

Sim is inspired by contemporary architecture and has been for a number of years, he automatically sees patterns within building's and blocks out areas of negative space as he subconsciously has already filled this in with vibrant patterns and colours from his initial glance.

He is devoted to how Textile Art and in particular pattern within art impacts our daily experiences and outlook. Sim’s work focuses on impact, he wants his viewers to be captivated by the intricacy of his structures and layers upon layers which he creates, regardless of the size of this artwork.

Hand drawn elements are at the forefront of Sim’s work, used in partnership with collage and traditional screen-printing techniques. He also embraces technological advances by combining hand drawn and collaged details with digitally printed aspects.
